Solid South Indian food! If you're looking for authentic South Indian food in nyc, definitely check out samudra and Jackson heights in general.

Food took a bit of time to come but everything was hot/fresh! We ordered a ton of dishes to share family style. We got the uthappam, masala dosa, sambhar idly, masala idly, dahi vada, tamarind rice, mango lassi, and yogurt rice. I'd recommend all of these dishes except the yogurt rice- thought the texture was too grainy and it was a bit sour. For the amount of food we ordered it came out to less than 20 a person with tax/tip and we had leftovers so it was a huge steal!!

This place saved our night out after we tried and failed to get served at Jackson Diner. The lassi and masala chai are cheaper here, too! Dosas were huge and delicious.

The Little India (#1) enclave within Jackson Heights has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to South Asian options, and Samudra happens to be one of the better choices for South Indian cuisine. They may not have a lot on their menu, but what they do have is always consistently good.

It's a relatively small place with a pseudo cafe-like ambiance. It's a bit more relaxed here, with a handful of tables and chairs that are good for small groups looking for a casual meal. It's rarely busy to the point where it feels tight, but for weekday dining, it's an easy choice for vegetarian lovers.

Items that stand out include dishes such as their thali plate and their fabulous selection of dosas. The gobi manchurian dosa is a good blend of spices with a little bit of crunch, but their classic potato is always an excellent choice. Though it's more for presentation than anything, I like their halwa poori and their pani puri for a good snack / appetizer. All of this should be enjoyed in-house and not as takeout.

I have enjoyed just about anything paneer here, from muttar to palak to makhani. Even though their chole bhature would be considered a bit northern compared to the rest of the selection, it's nevertheless a quality choice and prepared well. While the pakoras and samosas are hearty, they're nothing to write home about.

Service is generally pleasant but a tad slow at times. I would recommend coming here without being in a hurry and throwing back a chai tea, munching on a samosa chaat, and listening to the sweet sounds of Tamil being spoken by the staff. While they accept credit cards, cash will always be preferred.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in the whole city. We live in another borough but make it a point to come here whenever we can. We're vegetarians and it is a JOY to have such an ample menu from which to make our choices -- although, honestly, we've developed favorite dishes and often default to the same order even with the great selection available. Family-friendly dining, as well, welcoming to young children, which is not true everywhere. Very reasonably priced given the quality and portion size, especially if you order one of the combination specials.

Order the samosa chaat. You will not be disappointed. In fact, order all the chaats. I would eat here every day if it were practical.
